Vessel

Audio Transcript

It’s Antoinette Ferwerda and I’d like to share with you my Vessel art story, which is inspired by sculpture and human made objects, where a lump of clay might be fashioned and sculpted to form a utilitarian vessel.

The Vessel is something we would use each day and still find beauty in its imperfections, like the echo of a thumbprint or a wobbly edge if it is made by hand.

So, as human beings, I also feel that we refer to ourselves as vessels sometimes and we reference filling our cup.

So, I feel that all humans are connected to the Earth and the clay of something that is made of that, just like the Vessel is symbolic of life.

Handmade forms are the subject of Antoinette’s Vessel art story. Graphic lines and bold shapes evoke the subtle beauty of the everyday objects that capture her attention. Whether it is the echo of a thumbprint in hardened clay or a wobbly, undefined edge, the artist’s broad and descriptive brushstrokes demand attention for these usually unsung objects.
